On my trip to Jakarta last weekend, an old lady sat next to me. She’s about 60 years old. We started to have conversation at 4 o’clock in the morning. I woke up and wanted pee. I woke up her too because she was blocking my way. She sat by the aisle. And I sat by the window.
I did not know when she had sat next to me. She got in in Cilacap. I had been in my deep sleep. We started talking after that. Her name was Yenni. She went to Jakarta to see her daughter, Veronica. She told me much things about her Veronica and her husband, Rajiv. Veronica married to Bangladesh man, who has been living in California for years. He is a business lawyer. Veronica had been business lawyer before she married Rajiv.
She had sent Veronica to Georgia to pursue her master degree and became lawyer. But, as she married Rajiv, she gave up her work. Yenni felt a little sad, but she knew it’s a consequence of being married. Then, Veronica had started her art gallery in Senopati.
“I think, it’s better for Veronica to works as lawyer than runs her own business. But, she marries.” She told me how she had risen Veronica without husband (her husband had been died). She believed in Veronica. That’s why, she sent Veronica to study in Malang after had graduated from Elementary School in Cepu. “I knew her potential” She had a son too. Veronica elder brother. I asked her why she did not send Nico to Malang or other places. Since, Nico was a boy and elder son.
“Nico was less potential than Veronica. Besides, he did not want to study out of town” For a Chinese woman like her, it’s very revolutionary way of thinking.
Then, she told me about her visit to her daughter.
“I lost my weight every time I see my daughter. I never eat rice. And always eat with table manner. I’m too old to learn that. I always forget the table manner. Once, I learn, then I forget. I do not use it every day in Cepu. In ndeso, I use my bare hands to eat” then she laughed. “When I eat with table manner, I do not enjoy my food. But, I waste my time to think, how is the table manner. It makes me crazy!”
Well, I think the same thing, Ma’am.
